CIS 717.1 Fall 2003 K. Harrow

                    Course Requirements

Textbook:

      Database System Concepts 4th Edition

  (authors: Silberschatz, Korth, and Sudarshan)

in addition, you may need guides for the database systems we use

   (Access, SQL, and SQL Server)

Class Meetings

Class will meet Tuesday from 3:50 - 5:55 P.M. for a total of 14 class meetings. (We will not meet on Tuesday October 7.) The last class will be Tuesday, December 9.

Although attendance is not mandatory, you are responsible for whatever is done in class, and all homework assigned in class, whether or not you are there. Make sure you get the notes from someone if you miss a class.

Homework Assignments

There will be a number of homework assignments given out during the semester. These assignments will deal with the various database topics that we cover in class. Some of the assignments will involve working with a specific database, and some may involve other topics--for example, database design. Homework will be assigned every week (with a few exceptions).

Each homework will be due one and a half weeks after it is assigned (the end of the week after it is assigned). There will be a penalty for lateness, probably 10% per week late. Each assignment will be graded and returned to you, usually by the next class. Together, the homework will count for one third of your grade.

Exams

There will be a midterm exam—some time in November. The midterm exam will count for one third of your grade.

Final Exam

There will be a cumulative final exam, which will count for one third of your grade. The final will be Tuesday, December 23.
