The Major in Computer ScienceThis major is designed for students who have a general interest in computers and programming. It is suitable for those who want to work as a programmer or systems analyst, or for someone with an interest in going to graduate school in computer science. It is preparation for all non-specialized fields of computing.CS

CS majors must complete at least 60 credits in science and mathematics; 24 of these 60 credits must be CIS advanced electives taken at Brooklyn College with a grade of C or higher in each course. Advanced electives are those courses without an asterisk in Section IV or in the Bulletin.
Ordinarily, a Brooklyn College CIS major will meet the 24-credit requirement through required CIS courses and will not require additional CIS courses. Additional CIS, math, and science courses, of course, are always helpful. Students should make sure that they meet the 60-credit science requirement.
The following courses may be credited as science courses for the B.S. degree: all courses in biology, chemistry, computer and information science, geology, mathematics, physics, and psychology; courses in health and nutrition sciences marked with a (*) in the Bulletin; any Core Curriculum course whose number begins with the digit 3; Core Studies 5.1, 5.2, 7.1, 7.2, 8.1, 8.2; Anthropology and Archaeology 2.4, 16, 24.1, 26.1, 26.2, 36, 85.3; Economics 30.2, 30.3, 31.1, 31.2; Philosophy 13, 33, 42; Physical Education 22.71, 22.75, 23, 30, 51; and Sociology 77.1.
