Design sites so that your target audience will be able to view the site.
-
Education and school sites generally are optimized for 256 colors and
640 x 480 resolution
-
Business and graphics sites can use 24 bit images and 800 x 600 displays.
Optimize your media files so they download quickly.
You should use the default web font, or use some common fonts, Arial, Helvetica,
etc. If you use a non standard for, say Webdings, then you are merely suggesting
that font to the brower. If the user's computer doesn't have that font installed,
then the default font will be used. This may get some odd results.
Use graphics instead of fonts, if you really need the fonts to appear regardless
of fonts installed

AOL compresses images into an ART format. Users can turn this off and see
images much more clearer. Deselect User Compressed Graphics from the Web preference
menu. If you save images in Photoshop or other editors that use a preview image,
AOL will read this as the real image and visitors with ART turned on will see
poor images on your site.
You can set a background image for you pages as either an image or a color.
If you use a photo, try and soften the background, so the text is easy to read.
