Debate Format

Each person should be prepared to make his/her presentation, as described below. In addition, each person must prepare - in writing - two questions to ask the opposing team.

Each team will have about five minutes to present its case. First one member of the team should present an overview of the topic, including historical background and the overall context of the issue. Then the second member of the team should present their team's opinion on the issue. Explain your reasoning. Use facts to back up your position.

After both teams have presented their cases, the members of the first team will ask their questions to the second team. Then the members of the second team will ask questions to the first team.

When the debators have finished, the other students in the class (and the professor!) will have a chance to ask questions to both teams.

Everyone in the audience will fill out an evaluation form after each debate.

Aside from your oral presentation, remember that you are to create a web page (or pages) about the issue you are debating. The web page should lay out the issue, include background material. It should present your opinion clearly. Include links to background material and supporting references.

Your web pages are due on April 26, regardless of when your debate is scheduled.

Do not put this material directly on your home page! Instead, create a new web page for your debate topic, and create a link from your home page to your debate page.

The debates will take place on Thursday, April 19 and Thursday, April 26. The list of topics and teams is here.
