ALL PHYSICAL CLASSES AT THE COLLEGE HAVE BEEN MOVED TO ON LNE CLASSES, LIKE THE UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX OR UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE

This means that instead of coming to class, you will only get the information through the web site the way it has been posted all along. If you have any question about the material, you should e-mail me at the same e-mail address you have:

profbeatty@gmail.com

I will be watching for e-mails all of the time, as usual, but I will definitely be watching during the hours the class is on line

ALL of the notes from the beginning of the term have been posted including week 7, which is the first week in which there has been no physical class meeting.

There will be exams which are like the other one, except they will be on line. I have notified everyone in the class about this through the e-mail you have on your CUNY FIRST page. I have told the class repeatedly to make sure the e-mail on your CUNY FIRST page is correct, but a substantial number of the students have not done so. If you do not put the e-mail address you are using on your CUNY FIRST web page you will not get information or links to the exams.

There is an e-mail about the exams on whatever server you have listed for yourself on CUNY FIRST. I cannot change your e-mail on your CUNY FIRST web page. If you do not know how to do that you need to contact the college to find out how to do it.

This is the e-mail that was sent to everyone in the class.

I am sending you a link (below) for a practice test so you can see how the testing work. Below there is a link. Paste the link into your browser and the test will appear. Fill out the required fields (starred) and then answer the 4 question and click on "Submit".

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf2egnP8I8vI2VIAPlkHEUWD64LJQjY9FZ3oRZxz1ncnuMqXQ/viewform

That is all you have to do for this practice exam.

The MW class will have the actual exam on Wed. the first of April; the Friday class will get the exam on Friday, the third of April. I will send you the URL 10 minutes after the class would have be in (that is 1:00 pm for the MW class and 11:10 am for the Friday class. You should all be at your computers at that time. This should not be a problem since you should be in class at that time. Once you get the URL go there and take the exam. You will have 40 minutes to do the 25 question. At the end of 40 minutes the exam will close (that is no say you will not be able to submit your answers and you will get a 0 for the exam. Once you submit your answers you can not reopen the exam and change an answer.

If you are not getting my e-mails you need to change the e-mail on your CUNY First web page so it reflects the e-amil where you want the mail to go. Here is how to do that:

1. Navigate to Self Service > Student Center.

2. Your account information will be displayed on your Student Center screen. In the Personal Information section, use the drop down box to select "Email Addresses". After selecting the option, click the >> button.

3. Add your new email address under "other" and check the preferred button.

If you are having issues updating, please have them email esc@brooklyn.cuny.edu

If you are not getting e-mails from me, and you are not using the e-mail with the extension .brooklyn.cuny.edu you may have the mail in your spam folder. My gmail always shows the following when I send out a general notification to all students:

Be careful with this message

So if you are not getting my e-mails, check your spam or similar folders. None of the e-mails have been returned as undeliverable so they are going to the e-mail whihis listed on your CUNY First account.

The notes and study questions are now on line for week eight. This is the last set of notes you are responsible for the second exam which is on April 1 for the MW class and April 3 for the Fri class. You are, of course, also responsible for the readings for the second section of the course.

Remember the exam on April 1st will begin at 1:00 pm and will terminate at 1:40. The exam for the Friday class will begin on April 3rd at 11:10 and terminate at 11:50. You will receive the link for the exam in an e-mail at that time and the link will also be posted on the class web site which you should have been looking at from week 1 (johnbeatty.name) . There is NOTHING from this class posted on blackboard or zoom or any other website or platform.

25 MARCH 2020

As you know I put up the lecture notes (as I have one all term long) a week at a time. So there are no new notes going up today. You should look at the notes at least during the class time and e-mail me if you have any questions

Since I put up the lecture notes (as I have one all term long) a week at a time, the ones for today weer already posted The lecture notes are the ones I lecture from so they simply replace the lectures. INSTEAD OF GOING TO CLASS AND GETTING THE LECTURE NOTES IN ADDITION, YOU NOW JUST GET THE LECTURE NOTES WITHOUT HAVING TO LOOK AT AND LISTEN TO ME. Please do not send me e-mails asking me about Blackboard, Zoom, Ultra Zoom or any other form of communication. ALL THE CLASS WORK – LECTURES, EXAMS, REVIEW QUESTIONS ARE ONE THE WEB SITE AND ARE DEALT WITH THROUGH THE E-MAIL THAT IS ON YOUR CUNY FIRST WEB PAGE!

Since the notes go up once a week, there are no new notes going up today. You should be looking at the notes At least review them during the class time and e-mail me if you have any questions. Be sure to read the articles assigned in thee syllabus for "PART II" as well.

The exam that was scheduled for April 1 is cancelled as a result of "on line learning recalibration" something new that CUNY presidents have come up with:

"CUNY college presidents and deans, we have decided to institute a recalibration period beginning this Friday, March 27, through Wednesday April 1. Distance learning will resume on Thursday, April 2nd ON LINE"

I suspect they will now have to decide whether or not they are cancelling Spring break to replace this close down of learning. This will mean reshuffling the exam schedules and I will let you know when the next exam can take place. So I will postpone the exam until the administration makes a "final" decision.

Please continue to watch this web site for further updates.

MARCH 29, 2020

According to the latest information from the administration the Spring break is half over. The spring break is divided into two parts. The first is the recalibration period which we are now in and which ends on April 1st and the second part from April 8th April 10th. This means that we will have the second exam on the 15th of April for the Monday Wednesday class and on the 17th of April for the Friday class.

As before, the material for this exam is found in the class noted for week 6, week 7, and week 8 (see the notes for those weeks on the class web site). The articles for section 2 are also included.

I will send you a link through the e-mail for the site where the exam will be and it will also be posted on the web site.

For the MW class the exam will go on line at 1:00 pm and will be available until 1:40. At that point the computer will not accept any submissions so be sure to get on line at the right time and submit your answers on time. Once the answers are submitted, you cannot go back to the exam to change answers. You can change them if you have not entered "Submit"

For the Friday class the exam will go on line at 11:10 and will be available until 11:50. At that point the computer will not accept any submissions so be sure to get on line at the right time and submit your answers on time. Once the answers are submitted, you cannot go back to the exam to change answers You can change them if you have not entered "Submit"

If you have not done so, take the practice exam so you will feel comfortable with the format.

The same situation will occur for the third exam, which is tentatively scheduled now for May 6th for Monday/Wednesday classes and May 8th for the Friday classes.

Be sure to consult the web site regularly for updates.

APRIL 3

The notes and review game for week ten have been put up on the web site

Remember the second exam will be April 15 for the MW and April 17 for the Friday class

Be sure to consult the web site regularly for updates.

APRIL 10

Because of the closings of the college and the decision on the part of the administration to return to classes in the middle of Passover, the second exam will remain on Friday April 17th, but he Monday Wednesday class exam is rescheduled to Monday April 20th, As before, the URL for the exam will be sent in an e-mail and will also be posted on the web site.

APRIL 15

Given the closing and opening and closing and opening of the college as well as reopening in the middle of Passover, the schedule of exams has had to be changed several times. At the moment, the Friday class has its second exam THIS FRIDAY APRIL 17th and the Monday-Wednesday class will have its second exam THIS COMING MONDAY APRIL 20th. In both cases, a URL will be sent to you via your e-mail and will also be posted on the web site (http://www.sci.brooklyn.cuny.edu/~jbeatty/coresea/2020s/index.html) The material covered on the exam is from week 6,7 and 8. Which includes lecture notes and reading from PART II.

The exam is timed for 40 minutes and will begin 10 minutes after the class is scheduled to start. Forty minutes after that, you will not be able to submit your answers and the score will register as “0”. This means you must make an effort to be there on time and not wander in 20 minutes late.

The third exam will follow close on the heels of this one and is scheduled (barring administrative changes of mind) for FRIDAY MAY 1st for the Friday class, and MONDAY MAY 4th for the Monday Wednesday class. That exam will cover weeks 9,10 and 11 and the readings from PART III The procedure will be the same.

The final is cumulative and covers everything from day one. It will include, in addition towhat has already been covered, the lecture notes from weeks 12, 13 and 14 and the readings from Part IV.

The final will be twice the length of the previous exams and you will have 2 hours for that exam. Again, the exams (including the final) are all timed. Failure to submit the answers by the appointed time will mean you cannot submit them and you will get a “0” at that point.

As usual, this message is also posted on the web site.

Stay healthy

DO NOT COME LATE OR MISS THE EXAM

11 MAY 2020

READ ALL THE WAY TO THE END!!!!!

Please remember the final exam (listed in the syllabus) is

FOR THE MONDAY WEDNESDAY CLASS:
FINAL EXAM FOR 1050 MW12 is MONDAY MAY 18th from 10:30 to 12:30
DO NOT MAKE PLANS THAT WILL CAUSE YOU TO MISS THE FINAL

FOR THE FRIDAY CLASS
FINAL EXAM FOR 1050 F11 is FRIDAY MAY 22th from 10:30 to 12:30
DO NOT MAKE PLANS THAT WILL CAUSE YOU TO MISS THE FINAL

The final will be 50 questions of the same kind you have been getting on the previous tests. The final covers the whole term’s work. Review the earlier tests (I sent an answer sheet out earlier), go over the quizzes that were put up each week (even though they are fill ins) and read through the notes and the readings.

As you all know, the faculty members are submitting letter grades as usual. However, the University has made a policy which allows students to convert all letter grades ot Credit/No credit. Here is the statement from the Chancellor.

“As part of The City University of New York’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, all students shall have the option to convert any or all of the (A-F) letter grades they earn in their classes, during the spring 2020, to Credit/No Credit grading.”

Here is a link from the Chancellor to get the details on the Credit/No Credit grading.

https://www.cuny.edu/cuny-continuity/cuny-continuity-for-students/#grade-policy

Remember the decision to choose the letter grade or the Credit/No Credit option is YOURS (not mine, not the Chancellor’s). There are rules for making the change and you will have to follow those. There is a time limit and so I POST YOUR FINAL GRADES BY STUDENT ID ON THE CLASS WEB SITE as QUICKLY as possible BEFORE I SUBMIT THEM TO THE COLLEGE. That way if there is a problem you can let me know before I submit them permanently.

I will accept the extra credit papers until FRIDAY MAY 15th. YOU CAN TURN IN ONE AND ONLY ONE X CREDIT PAPER

This note is also on the website for the class.

Good luck on the final.
