day 8: xi'an

today was a day of exploring central/downtown xi'an. in the morning (after my blissfully spartan -- and tasty -- breakfast), i wandered out of the hotel and decided to walk away from the street, and found an excellent market as well as various vendors of pretty yummy-looking breakfast foods.

i went back towards the center of town, and found a store making and selling arhus (kinda crappy ones, i think), so i bought a few bows. i stood in the (small) store for quite a long time while the two guys there COMPLETELY ignored me. i practically had to sit in one guy's lap to get his attention, at which point he communicated that 3 bows would cost about $5. that seemed a fair price, but i thought i'd see what would happen if i tried to knock 25% off. he just snorted and waved his hand at me -- go on, take them. so, i got ripped off. hard to complain.
