Text and Network Operations on Mac OS X
For those of you using Mac OS X on your computers outside of school,
this document explains how to use the Mac tools that correspond to the
PC Notepad, ping, and tracert programs.
Editing Text Documents
To create text documents (in the same way we use Notepad on the PC),
use the TextEdit application (which should be in your
Applications folder). Before you start using
TextEdit, you need to make a few changes to your preferences, so go to
the TextEdit menu and pick Preferences.... Make sure
your settings look like the screen capture below (the important things
are marked):

Network operations
The easiest way to do ping and tracert on the Mac is to open the
Network Utility, which you can find in the
Utilities folder (which is inside the Applications
folder). When you run this utitliy, you'll see several tabs,
including tabs for ping and tracert. Simply select the appropriate
tab, and operation should be straightforward. Below are screen
