Notes
- Email is the best and fastest way to reach me.
- My previous email address, briskman
@sci , no longer receives emails due to a recent change by the Brooklyn College ITS. Please send all emails to miriam.briskman.brooklyn .cuny .edu @brooklyn ..cuny .edu - If I am not at my office while you are calling, please contact the Computer and Information Science Department's main office at (718) 951-5657 during regular office hours and ask to leave a message.
- For students taking my classes:
- All office hours are optional.
- You are welcome to visit any of the sessions held this semester as wanted.
- You can find the link to the office hours sessions on Brightspace (CUNY's Learning Management System, created by D2L.)
- All the office hours this semester are held online.
- They will be delivered from home, so don't arrive at my office room at the hours specified above.
- If you aren't taking classes with me this semester, or if you are a student but can't make it to the office hours above, please email me to schedule an alternative office hours session.
- I will email you a link to a Zoom session that is set at a time convenient to you.
- Alternatively, if you prefer to speak with me in person, indicate so in your email. I'll be glad to schedule a meeting with you on any day I am on campus. The meeting's location will be at the CISC's department office at Ingersoll Hall, room 2109, at the time of your choice.
- Question: I didn't take the exam that took place yesterday. Will I be allowed to take a make-up exam on another day?
Answer: If you spoke to me in-person or contacted me by email at least 3 hours before the exam started (unless, G-d forbid, in an unconscious state in a hospital – in that case, email me as soon as you gain consciousness and your doctor lets you,) and you have a documented, serious emergency reason for missing the exam (e.g., illness, major holiday, hospitalization, major life event of yours or a first-degree relative or grandparent/grandchild,) and attach that supporting document to the email, you are eligible for taking a make-up exam on a day convenient to you. I will reply to your email, letting you know whether the situation you encounter is consider excused or not; in case it's not excused, you will need to arrive to take the exam on the day of the exam with the rest of the class.
Otherwise, if you contact me after 3 hours prior to the exam start time, such as during the exam or the next day, or miss the exam for a non-emergency reason, or if can't provide a supporting document, you won't be allowed to take a make-up exam, with no exceptions, which means that your grade for that exam is 0. - Question: I travel or go on a vacation, and will miss an exam. Will I be allowed to take a make-up exam on another day?
Answer: No – you won't be allowed to take a make-up exam in that case, since a vacation or trip isn't considered an emergency reason according to the syllabus, even if you purchased non-refundable flight, train, or cruise tickets. If you don't arrive on campus to take your in-person exam on the day of the exam, you will receive a grade of 0 for the exam. - Question: I plan on attending an educational or job-related conference, and will miss an exam. Will I be allowed to take a make-up exam on another day?
Answer: No – you won't be allowed to take a make-up exam in that case, since attending a conference isn't considered an emergency reason according to the syllabus, even if you already purchased non-refundable conference tickets or tarvel tickets, or reserved a hotel room. If you don't arrive on campus to take your in-person exam on the day of the exam, you will receive a grade of 0 for the exam. - Question: I am considering to register for an in-person class you teach next semester, but I work at a shift that overlaps with class time. Will I be excused from attending lectures?
Answer: No – you won't be excused. According to the class syllabus (of all in-person classes I teach, regardless of the class you plan on taking,) having a regular weekly or biweekly shift that overlaps with the lectures and prevents you from attending lecture won't excuse you from the lectures. That is, you will lose attendance and participation points, which together are worth at least 25% of the course grade. This means you will earn a C for the course in the best case.
Bottom line: if you will be working at shifts that prevent you from attending the lectures of the class, or if you consider applying for and landing a job that will prevent you from attending lectures, please take a different course. - Question: I am looking for a CISC 4900 project supervisor. Could you supervise my project?
Answer: Due to an intense teaching and PhD schedule, I am not available for supervising any 4900 projects, unfortunately, until further notice. - Question: I am taking one of your classes this semester. Can I do an honors project for this class?
Answer: Yes! Whether you have an idea of a project you'd like to do or are searching for ideas, I will be glad to assist you in completing an honors project for this course. Make sure to speak to me early on into the semester as soon as you know you'll be doing an honors project so that we decide what the project will be about and other relevant details. - Question: Will exams in the course be open book?
Answer: It depends on the course you are asking about. In some courses, the exam is computerized (is taken on a computer,) and students are allowed to use any paper and digital materials during the exam. In other classes, the exams are oral, and people are allowed to use any paper materials only (not digital materials.) A prep guide that explain what materials you are allowed and disallowed to use will be shared with the class shortly before each exam. In either case, students are disallowed to communicate with anyone during the exam, neither in-person nor digitally (calls, messaging, etc,) and will receive a 0 for their exam if they do. - Question: What courses/sections are you teaching next semester? Will you be teaching a class that I am looking forward to taking?
Answer: Check out CUNY's Global Class Search Tool to view which classes I am teaching next semester (if next semester's schedule was already posted.) To have the tool show only the sections that a specific instructor is teaching, enter the instructor's last name into the search form. - Question: I am trying to register for a class that you are teaching next semester, but the class is full. Could you, please, enroll me in your class?
Answer: It could be great to have you in class! The issue is that if the section has no available seats, the CISC department does not allow overtallies for any courses, with no exceptions. As an instructor, I have no say in this case and can't add or ask the college to add students to my class, even if you are on the class's waitlist. I truly apologize for the inconvenience that this situation causes. - Question: I emailed you at your sci.brooklyn.cuny.edu email address, but didn't get a response from you. What should I do?
Answer: I apologize for not receiving your previous message. Due to a technical issue at Brooklyn College's info-tech services (ITS), my sci.brooklyn.cuny.edu mailbox no longer receives emails since February 2025. Please resend your email message at miriam.briskman@ : I will respond to it as soon as possible.brooklyn .cuny.edu
