Easy way of understanding matrix multiplication: 'inner' vs. 'outer' dimensions. We multiply a 4 by 2 matrix by a 2 by 3 matrix. The inner dimensions are 2 and 2, which are equal as required, while the outer dimensions are 4 and 3, which are the dimensions of the resulting matrix (4 by 3).
