Computer Buses: Examples
Examples of modern buses include PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express), USB (Universal Serial Bus), SATA (Serial ATA), and the Expansion bus.
- PCI or PCIe ("Peripheral Component Interconnect Express") is known for high data transfer rates and is often used for connecting graphics cards, storage drives, and network cards. The reason for the high speed of this bus is that it is shorter (so its takes less time for data to reach its destination on the bus.)
- USB is widely used for peripheral devices like keyboards, mice, and external drives, supporting data transfer and device power.
- SATA is a standard interface for connecting hard drives and SSDs, offering reliable speeds for data storage applications.
- Expansion buses connect main memory (or the CPU) with I/O devices, such as the screen, the keyboard, the mouse, etc. This bus is longer than the PCIe bus, which means that it transfers data slower than PCIe.
Each bus type is optimized for its specific purpose, with speeds and capabilities suited to its target devices.
