Stream Ciphers vs. Block Ciphers

The other type of symmetric ciphers is block ciphers, which encrypt blocks (chunks) of bits, rather than single bits, at a time.

• All the blocks have the same size: we divide the plaintext into equally-sized chunks and encrypt each chunk.
• This is the most used technique for encryption.
