Virtual Private Networks: Types
- Site-to-Site (Intranet and Extranet) VPN: Site-to-site VPN connects one network to another network over the Internet, such as connecting a remote branch office to the corporate headquarters LAN. In this setup, the tunnel is created between two VPN gateways.
The VPN gateway is responsible for authentication of the user/network, encryption, and integrity of data.
The VPN tunnel is created between two sites allowing the company's network and resources available to the remote location. This solution is ideal for small offices located in remote parts of the world.
Two networks are connected as if they are one. Any device on one network can communicate with the device on the other network securely as if the other device is part of the same network.
